The Wisconsin Labor Map
The Wisconsin Labor History Map Project
Welcome!
The Wisconsin Labor History Map Project is dedicated to preserving the history of workers and unions in Wisconsin and demonstrating the value they bring to our communities.
Our map provides short descriptions, images and links to resources for historically significant labor sites and events within Wisconsin.
This is an evolving project! You can help us build the map with your knowledge and experience of Wisconsin history, or your website skills. Contact us at wiscolabormap350@gmail.com
The Wisconsin Labor History Map Project is a collaboration between students at UW-Madison, the South Central Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, and the Havens Center for Social Justice. We hope others will collaborate with us as the project grows..
The Wisconsin Labor History Map Project
In 2009, former Governor Jim Doyle signed legislation calling on public schools to teach the history of organized labor and bargaining in social studies classes. The Labor and Working Class Studies Project (LWCSP) then initiated the Labor Map Project to serve as a resource for teachers, and for the public. However, the Wisconsin Uprising at the Capitol building and across the state in 2011 spurred the LWCSP to focus on other much-needed work.
The Project was on hold until the South Central Federation of Labor (SCFL), AFL-CIO met with UW-Madison Professor Carolina Sarmiento to discuss how her service learning course (Civil Society and Community Studies 350) could volunteer to the labor community. The Labor Map was thus reignited in the Fall of 2015. Students are continuing their work with SCFL to build a map that will reflect the rich labor history of our entire State and the invaluable contributions made by workers.
There is much work to be done! Let us know how you can contribute to the project by contacting wiscolabormap350@gmail.com
